Concert, FAB I&I duo

FAB I&I is a singer-songwriter from New Caledonia who has had reggae in his blood ever since he played his first guitar chords. Self-taught, he formed his first band with some cousins to play classics of the genre and took to the mic.
 But even then, it was reggae that really got Fab’s heart racing, and in 2010 the line-up expanded to become I&Iration, which would go on to make a name for itself with its covers of Bob Marley. With his unique vocal tone, Fab slips effortlessly and naturally into the compositions of the master, Bob. The I&Iration adventure took off in 2011, the anniversary of the passing of the King of Reggae. The band played the bar circuits of Nouméa, building a growing reputation that led to invitations to perform on major local stages. For whilst Bob Marley’s roots reggae is a sure-fire hit in New Caledonia, the challenge lies in rising to the occasion without betraying the original version. It was a success: the audience turned out in force for every gig. Fab developed a taste for the stage and the adrenaline rush that comes with that magical moment. Ambitious and dedicated, the musician approaches every gig as a new challenge, driven by the desire to ‘always do better than last time’.

In 2012, the band became I&I and set about recording their first self-produced album, keen to bring their own musical flavour to it.
This was the moment for Fab to explore his songwriting talents. He experimented, worked hard, learnt to structure his lyrics and make the words resonate. He wrote and composed all 12 tracks on ‘Common Fate’, released in 2014. He naturally turned to English to express himself on unifying and positive themes, in keeping with Rastafarian values. ‘Common Fate’, the title track of the album, is the finest example of this. Through this powerful message of peace and living together – values so dear to New Caledonia – the track captures the spirit of this band, made up of musicians from diverse backgrounds who share a love of music and create together. A track which, according to Fab, ‘suits them down to the ground’, becoming almost an emblem.
