International conference: Geneviève Thibault de Chambure - treasures from her collection

Description

As a preview to William Christie's famous Festival dans les Jardins, the Royaumont Foundation and Les Arts Florissants have joined forces to organise a symposium entitled "Geneviève Thibault de Chambure: treasures from her collection", to mark the 50th anniversary of the death of musicologist, collector and patron Geneviève de Chambure.

Geneviève Thibault de Chambure (1902-1975) was an outstanding figure in musicology and early music. Since her death, her many works have continued to nourish musicological and organological research, just as her name remains attached to that of two national heritage institutions: the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Musée de la Musique.

Founder of the Société de musique d'Autrefois (SMA) in 1926, she worked for decades to bring forgotten repertoires to light. She based this research on an outstanding collection of early scores that she had begun at the age of twenty and whose breadth covered French, German and Italian vocal and instrumental music from the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries. In addition to her passion for manuscripts and music books, she also had a passion for early instruments, building up the largest collection ever assembled in France in this field.

After a first part at the Fondation Royaumont, from 13 to 15 June 2025, the international symposium devoted to the treasures of her collection will take place at the Fondation Les Arts Florissants in Thiré (Vendée, Pays de la Loire) on 22 August, the day before the opening of the Festival Dans les Jardins de William Christie.
