As part of the season of celebrations to mark William Christie's 80th birthday, this concert pays tribute to one of the conductor's favourite composers: Marc-Antoine Charpentier.
Although he is now regarded as one of the emblems of the French Baroque, it was in Rome that the young Marc-Antoine's career began, and his later works were constantly enamelled with Italian influences - and stamped with Roman Catholicism.
Emmanuel Resche-Caserta, first violin and musical assistant to William Christie, invites us here to discover this lesser-known facet of the composer, by comparing his sacred works with those of his transalpine contemporaries, such as Cazzati and Stradella. An invitation to a musical journey between France and Italy at the end of the seventeenth century.
At the end of the candlelit concerts: "Meditations at the Dawn of Night".
Short concerts of sacred repertoire by candlelight, the Night Dawn Meditations bring each day of the Festival to a close in a contemplative atmosphere, without applause from the audience.
Accessible only to holders of a Candlelight Concert ticket (included in the ticket).
