Points of interest
Ilot de Chaillezais
Also called "feudal clod" it served from the first centuries to protect itself from invasions thanks to a primitive castle. Between the ash trees and the willows cut into tadpoles, the ditches covered with aquatic lentils are lined with False Flag Iris or salicaires.
The spiritual center
Following a private purchase, the nuns of Sainte-Thérèse left the Château de St Hilaire, located at the entrance of the commune, to settle here. It became a place of seminary from 1940 to 1942, and since the 1950s it has rediscovered its original vocation as a place of retreat and spiritual centre.
You enter a site of 90 ares which is the subject of a biotope order since 1988. Many species of butterflies and flowers of southern type line the circuit. The small blue butterflies very present in spring are "blue argus". It is said that when Mélusine built the castle of Maillezais she used stone on the hill...!
St Mary Magdalene Church
Having suffered heavy damage during the wars of religions, its style is apparent to the Gothic Revival. The architect Victor CLAIR built it on the foundations of the thirteenth. Its stained-glass windows recount the episodes of the life of the patron saint of the church. His organ was restored between 1987 and 1990 by M. GUERRIER, organ builder of Willer (68).
