EuroVelo 1, also referred to as the “Atlantic coastal route” or, for the French section, the “Vélodyssée”, is a cycling itinerary of 8,186 km.

Velodyssée runs from Norway’s North Cape to Sagres in Portugal. The route thus crosses western Europe from north to south and follows the Atlantic coastline. It crosses six countries in succession: Norway, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Spain and Portugal.

Vélodyssée also includes the coastal section of the Vendée à Vélo network, and crosses South Vendée Atlantic from La Faute-sur-Mer going around the Baie de l’Aiguillon and on to Sainte-Radégonde-des-Noyers.

From Les Sables d’Olonne to La Rochelle

Vélodyssée is forty or so kilometres of cycle path in South Vendée Littoral. Our section runs from La Tranche-sur-Mer to Marans:

Vélodyssée is an energising route through a wilderness on an Atlantic Ocean backdrop. From Les Sables d’Olonne to La Rochelle, the Vendée coast stretches as far as the Marais Poitevin. From La Tranche-sur-Mer to Saint-Michel-en-l’Herm, you’ll follow the La Casse de la Belle Henriette lagoon. Then, if you’re motivated enough, you’ll climb the Île de la Dive for a breathtaking view over the Pointe de l’Aiguillon, the Baie de l’Aiguillon and Île de Ré.

A breather before heading back to the coast

From Saint-Michel-en-l’Herm you’ll cross the dry marsh with its vast cultivated stretches dotted with farms known as “cabanes”. Be sure, however, to take a few precautions before you leave the village. You’ll be alone in the middle of nowhere, without shelter, far from civilisation and with no water supply for a long distance, until you reach the bridge, the Pont du Brault. Before you run out of pedal power, stop to take a selfie near one of the sluice gates, crossing the hydraulic structure from one canal to another.

My favourite experience is the sunrise or sunset at the Port de l’Epine in Puyravault, a port with wooden jetties and a sluice gate. And its timeless setting with birds keeping vigil, and the view over the mudflats.Karine, a keen seeker of great romantic experiences

Great ideas with the “Accueil Vélo” label:

Accueil Vélo is a national brand. It guarantees cycling tourists receive good hospitality and quality services. Based on a quality charter, the label is awarded to various types of establishment located within 5 km of a cycle path of special interest.
