Castle Bessay
Registered and listed sites
Description
Listed as a historic monument in 1928, Bessay Castle is now a private residence open to the public.
Built on the site of an ancient feudal motte, it comprises two Renaissance towers, linked by a main building dating from the 18th century.
Its history is deeply intertwined with that of the Bessay family, a prominent and powerful family who remained its owners until 1988.
The Renaissance tower’s uniqueness lies in its medieval inspiration and defensive features: a parapet walk, machicolations and arrow slits.
Its grounds, with their ancient trees, are home to one of the region’s largest dovecotes, featuring 3,200 nesting boxes. It has been listed as a historic monument since 1990.
