Conférence, Joël et Jan Martel, des sculpteurs en Vendée
Conference
Description
Born in Nantes in 1896, twins Jan and Joël Martel owed their attachment to the Vendée to their mother's family from Bois-de-Céné. They have been praised for their "creative twinship" since the early 1920s. They went on to become avant-garde Art Deco artists of national and international renown.
Among their hundreds of works, funerary monuments, war memorials and commemorative monuments, busts, frescoes, statues in the round, low and high reliefs, sacred art, animal sculptures, even groups and decorative objects... the forty or so creations and projects they created in or about the Vendée, from the early 1920s to the early 1960s, before disappearing within a few months of each other, in 1966, will be remembered.
On the occasion of the centenary of the International Exhibition of Decorative Arts, they symbolise "DECO ART in motion".
