Le Quartier des Artistes
Description
In Thiré, a small village in the southern Vendée, the Artists’ Quarter tells a wonderful story of heritage and creativity. Thanks to an initiative by William Christie and the Les Arts Florissants Foundation, several old houses and buildings in the village have been given a new lease of life to welcome artists, musicians and cultural projects.
As you wander through the streets, discover a veritable international artistic and cultural hub, where restored rural heritage stands alongside spaces dedicated to music, education and creativity. The Maison In Terra Pax welcomes artists, whilst the Salle de Bal, a historic building with a rich history, is now used for rehearsals and certain events. The Maison de la Fontaine and the Grange complete this complex with spaces for work, training and socialising. Former homes have also been refurbished to accommodate artists in residence.
The Artists’ Quarter can be explored at your leisure whilst strolling through the village of Thiré. Whilst not all the buildings are open to visitors, their façades and architecture bear witness to the village’s gradual transformation around this cultural project.
The walk continues through two landscaped areas, accessible free of charge all year round:
- Ida Jones Christie Park, created in honour of William Christie’s mother, offers a leafy setting ideal for relaxation and picnics.
- The Jardin des Îles, situated on the banks of the Smagne, invites you to stroll beneath the trees and enjoy a refreshing break by the water’s edge.
These two public gardens are separate from the famous William Christie Gardens, also located in Thiré, where an admission fee applies.
Beyond its heritage, the Quartier des Artistes is also a vibrant place. Residencies, rehearsals, workshops and events punctuate life in this village, which has become a meeting place for artists from all walks of life.
An original and free experience in Thiré, offering a different way to appreciate the village, its restored heritage and the musical world of Les Arts Florissants.
Feel free to stroll around the quarter and enjoy free access to both gardens all year round. The buildings housing the artists are not open to the public for general viewing.
