It was from the famous melody of the lied “La Truite” that Franz Schubert composed one of the movements of his celebrated Piano Quintet, a work radiant with freshness and joy. The inclusion of the double bass in the instrumental line-up – a very rare occurrence – was a bold move.
Twenty years later, Louise Farrenc, a highly acclaimed composer of her time, used the same instrumental line-up to compose her Quintet Op. 30 in A minor, whose romantic fervour and extreme refinement make it a work that is an absolute must-hear.
