Théâtre, Adieu Monsieur Haffmann
Description
Paris. May 1942.
A decree is issued requiring Jews to wear the yellow star. On the brink of bankruptcy, Joseph Haffmann, a Jewish jeweller, offers his employee Pierre Vigneau the chance to take over the running of his shop: ‘I’d like you to live here with your wife for the next few months whilst we wait for the situation to return to normal… Haffmann & Sons Jewellers would become Vigneau Jewellers. ”
Aware that Pierre would also have to take the risk of harbouring his ‘former’ boss clandestinely within the shop’s walls, he eventually accepted Joseph’s proposal on condition that Joseph accepted his own: “Isabelle and I want a child at all costs. After several unsuccessful attempts, we had some tests done… I am infertile, Mr Haffmann… I would like you to have sexual relations with my wife until she falls pregnant…”
